Netflix has officially ordered a new series adaptation of Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Lonesome Dove. The western drama will be co-showrun by Zoe Kazan and Jeb Stuart, who previously collaborated on Netflix's upcoming East of Eden limited series.
Independent studio Teton Ridge Entertainment, specializing in stories of the American West, secured the rights to the Lonesome Dove franchise earlier this year. They brought in Kazan and Stuart to pen the adaptation, leading to a competitive bidding situation that ultimately resulted in a straight-to-series order from Netflix.
The forthcoming series will follow the adventures of former Texas Rangers Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call as they embark on a perilous cattle drive from the Rio Grande to Montana. The narrative explores themes of longing, friendship, and the pursuit of a meaningful life across the untamed American West.
Published in 1986, Lonesome Dove was a massive commercial success, spending extensive time on bestseller lists and selling over 4 million copies. Its 1989 miniseries adaptation garnered significant acclaim, winning multiple awards including seven Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes.
