London is currently hosting its unique competitive Latino film festival, an event spanning five days and showcasing 60 films from 27 diverse countries. This cinematic celebration is taking place at prominent venues including the Barbican, the ICA, Ciné Lumière, and BFI Stephen Street.
The festival was established by Cuban actress Ketty Rodriguez, who observed a gap in Latin representation within London's multicultural fabric upon her arrival. She stated the festival aims to support and display features, documentaries, animation, and shorts from filmmakers across Latin America.
Beyond international entries, the festival also includes films created in London that resonate with local audiences. Victor Rios, a British-Bolivian filmmaker, emphasized the event's importance in celebrating both Latin roots and British-Latino identity, asserting its role in establishing a sense of belonging and contribution within society.
Notable guests attending include Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, Argentine actor Óscar Martínez, Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría, and Oscar-winning Chilean screenwriter Gonzalo Maza. The festival is supported by BFI National Lottery funding and the City of London Corporation.
