Set almost entirely within a single London hotel room after an explosion, a British comedy thriller explores the pitfalls of social media. The film stars Charlotte Ritchie as Charlie, a woman whose online popularity diminishes as she invests more effort into it.
When an explosion disrupts her life, Charlie seizes the opportunity to engage with a real-world crisis, seeking to capitalize on the situation. This endeavor unfolds against the backdrop of authorities and fellow captives with differing perspectives. The narrative prioritizes tension over comedic effect, though moments of slapstick punctuate the story.
Ultimately, "Hostages" provides a starkly nihilistic commentary on the nature of social media. Those disillusioned by online culture will find resonance in its cynical portrayal of fame and public perception.
