Beneath Llandudno's Great Orme lies a forgotten Victorian reservoir, Y Fach, a grand space of red brick arches that evokes an underground cathedral. This significant piece of local heritage, largely inaccessible for decades, is now being reimagined as a landmark immersive arts venue.
The Llandudno Vaults project aims to transform this unusual space into a vibrant cultural hub. It will merge its historical Victorian engineering with Welsh culture, mythology, and storytelling. Visitors will descend into an atmospheric world where water, echoing acoustics, and innovative projection and sound technology bring Welsh myths and creatures vividly to life through performance.
Originally built and opened by the Prince of Wales on June 17, 1880, the reservoir initially served as a water facility. After plans for a roof in 1914, it was discreetly hidden and largely forgotten. The ambition is to reveal this engineering treasure, creating a new visitor experience that respects its past while offering a unique year-round attraction.
This project presents an exciting opportunity to unlock a hidden part of the town's heritage. By combining Victorian history with Welsh cultural stories, it has the potential to become a distinctive attraction, supporting the local economy and showcasing North Wales' unique heritage.
