Lizzo's Jury Duty Exit: Anti-ICE Stance Cited

Pop singer Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, was recently excused from jury duty in Los Angeles. Officials stated her dismissal was due to previously expressed anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) views, which she acknowledged would prevent her from serving fairly. The case involved a man accused of assaulting an ICE agent during an anti-ICE protest in June. Prosecutors alleged the defendant struck the agent, causing injury and breaking his glasses.

Lizzo had documented her day at the courthouse on Instagram, sharing her outfit and jury summons. While celebrity status often leads to dismissal from jury service, in Lizzo's specific case, her political stance was cited as the reason. She had also previously voiced criticisms of police departments. The trial of the accused assailant concluded with his acquittal on all charges shortly after Lizzo's dismissal from the jury.
