The young actresses portraying Mary Ingalls and Laura Ingalls in the new Netflix "Little House on the Prairie" adaptation have shared their personal bonds with the beloved book series. Skywalker Hughes, who plays Mary, recalled reading the books extensively as a child after her mother first read them to her. Alice Halsey, portraying Laura, noted that while her character is similar to the book version, she appears more mature in the show, better understanding family circumstances.
Both actresses found the pioneer era fascinating. Halsey commented on the Ingalls family's resourcefulness and their community's constant struggle for survival. Hughes was particularly captivated by the era's fashion, praising the intricate details of the calico prints and the silhouette-creating undergarments, expressing amazement at the behind-the-scenes costume work.
The "Little House on the Prairie" series premiered on Netflix on July 9 and has already been renewed for a second season. Halsey previously expressed the significant responsibility she felt to honor Laura Ingalls Wilder's legacy, finding support from her castmates.
