"The Southern Chronicles," a recent Lithuanian film, has captivated its home audience, with 412,000 people attending screenings, representing a significant one-fifth of the country's population. The film's producer noted the overwhelming box office admission results were initially hard to believe.
The narrative centers on a 17-year-old navigating love and his future during Lithuania's re-independence period in the 1990s. Director Ignas Miskinis cast emerging talent from Lithuanian drama schools, many of whom were acting students at the time and have since become recognized actors.
To authentically portray the 1990s setting on a modest budget, the production team deliberately used period VHS cameras, foregoing modern digital equipment. Despite a rapid 25-day principal photography schedule and post-production challenges including inflation, the film has emerged as a notable success in the growing Lithuanian film industry.
