Originally from Baton Rouge, Perez's own experiences with conversion therapy fueled his commitment to recovering queer narratives. After relocating to New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina, he became a vital chronicler of the city's LGBTQ+ life. His efforts culminated in co-founding the LGBT+ Archives Project of Louisiana, formally established in 2014.
Perez authored or co-authored more than six books, delving into the history of New Orleans' gay culture and significant figures. He also shared his knowledge through LGBTQ+ history tours and teaching at Loyola University New Orleans. His impact was further recognized through various accolades, including being a Southern Decadence and New Orleans Pride grand marshal.
