Levy Urges Hollywood to Fund Queer Voices

The Critics Choice Association recently hosted its third annual Celebration of LGBTQ+ Cinema & Television in Los Angeles, marking an early start to Pride Month festivities. The event honored a notable lineup of LGBTQ+ talent, including actor Dan Levy, comedian Hannah Einbinder, and actor Noah Schnapp.

During his acceptance speech, Dan Levy, campaigning for his new show 'Big Mistakes,' called for more investment in queer storytelling. He expressed a desire for queer creators to produce content without the pressure of solely proving its commercial viability, noting that successful shows like 'Schitt's Creek' and 'Heated Rivalry' were initially championed by Canada.

Noah Schnapp reflected on his decade-long role as Will Byers in 'Stranger Things.' He shared that portraying a character's coming-out journey in the '80s profoundly influenced his own public declaration of identity at 18.

Hannah Einbinder received praise for her outspoken advocacy for Palestine, which has persisted despite significant public backlash, doxxing, and threats. Einbinder, whose show 'Hacks' recently concluded its run, emphasized that while queer representation is crucial, authentic storytelling is best achieved when queer individuals author their own narratives.

Additional honorees at the event included The Boulet Brothers, Bre-Z, Brandon Scott Jones, Dearbhla Walsh, Gina Yashere, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, and Paula Pell, underscoring the breadth of LGBTQ+ talent recognized.
