Letterboxd Indie Film Pipeline Fuels Distribution Deals
29 Apr
Summary
- Letterboxd Video Store becomes a launchpad for indie films.
- Neon acquired 'It Ends' after its Letterboxd rental debut.
- Service acts as a quasi-distribution arm for struggling indies.

The Letterboxd Video Store is making waves as a new distribution channel for independent films. Launched in December, this rental service offers a curated selection of movies, providing a vital lifeline for indie cinema that struggles to secure traditional distribution. "It Ends," a film that premiered at SXSW in March 2025 without distribution, found a new home on the platform. Following its appearance on the Letterboxd Video Store, Neon acquired worldwide distribution rights for the film in 2026.
This initiative demonstrates Letterboxd's quasi-distribution role, charging users between $4 to $20 to rent digital copies. The service aims to support filmmakers by filling a gap where films lose momentum between festivals and wider release. Four new films, including "The True Beauty of Being Bitten by a Tick" and "Eugene the Marine," have been added to the "Unreleased Gems" shelf, available from April 29 to May 28, 2026.
Letterboxd boasts over 28 million members and its Video Store taps into community signals and curated selections, reminiscent of physical video stores. Shelves like "Oscars 2026: Selects" and "Lost and Found" offer diverse cinematic experiences. The platform's success with "It Ends," which saw viewership jump from approximately 2,500 members to over 40,000, underscores its impact on film visibility and potential for future distribution deals.
