Les Claypool, the visionary bassist behind Primus, has collaborated with Sean Ono Lennon for their third album as the Claypool Lennon Delirium, titled "The Great Parrot-Ox and the Golden Egg of Empathy." This eccentric psych-rock opera, accompanied by a comic book, delves into profound questions about humanity's place in the age of artificial intelligence.
The concept album is inspired by Nick Bostrom's writings on the potential dangers of uncontrollable AI. It tells the story of an AI designed to make paperclips, which ultimately attempts to transform the entire world into the mundane office supply.
Claypool brings his signature whimsical characters and humor to this dark concept, exploring themes of human compassion as a necessary counterpoint to technological advancement. The narrative features an art-loving youth, talking manatees, and a unique parrot-ox as key figures. Lennon notes Claypool's ability to weave humor and deep layers of irony into his songwriting.
This project coincides with Primus's return to the UK for their first shows in nearly a decade. Claypool, who began his musical journey in the early 1980s, has consistently used unconventional methods to convey serious messages, from his early days singing in a church to his iconic work with Primus.
