Eight years ago, on October 2, 2017, the music world lost a legendary figure when Tom Petty, the frontman of the iconic band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, passed away at the age of 66. Petty had risen to prominence in the 1970s with hits like "American Girl," "Free Fallin'," "Refugee," and "I Won't Back Down," cementing his status as a rock icon.
In addition to his successful solo career, Petty also joined the supergroup the Traveling Wilburys in 1988, collaborating with the likes of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne. Over the course of his illustrious career, Petty released 13 albums with the Heartbreakers, two with the Traveling Wilburys, and three solo albums, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
Tragically, Petty's life was cut short due to an accidental drug overdose. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the cause of death was a "multisystem organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity," with several medications, including fentanyl and oxycodone, found in his system. Petty had been dealing with a fractured hip, which had worsened and potentially led to the overdose, as his family revealed that the "pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication."
