In the upcoming documentary "Dick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration," director Steve Boettcher aims to capture the essence of the legendary entertainer's remarkable 80-year career. The film, set to hit theaters for a limited run on December 13 and 14, 2025, just in time for Van Dyke's 100th birthday, promises to reveal "new sides" of the beloved actor, singer, and dancer.
Boettcher has been working on the project for nearly 30 years, starting with interviews of Van Dyke's former co-stars, some of whom have since passed away, including Mary Tyler Moore, Carl Reiner, and Betty White. The director's goal was to tell the story through the eyes of those who had the privilege of working alongside the multi-talented performer.
The documentary will take viewers on a journey through Van Dyke's extensive filmography, from his iconic roles in "Mary Poppins," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and "Bye, Bye Birdie." Both Moore and Reiner, who collaborated with Van Dyke on his self-titled sitcom, gush about his exceptional talent and generous spirit, with Reiner calling him "the most gifted physical comedian that ever lived."
Despite the wealth of information already available about Van Dyke's life and career, Boettcher assures fans that they will discover fresh perspectives and touching moments in the film. As the director notes, "This is an 80-year career in the making, and I think it's easy to look at a few shows and say, 'Wow, those are great,' but collectively, what does that all mean? Why is he so extraordinary today? Why do we love him so much?"
