Lee Jeans Sit-In: Factory Occupation Inspires New Musical
29 Apr
Summary
- Female workers occupied a factory for seven months in 1981.
- Their strike inspired a new stage musical called Stand and Deliver.
- The community provided support, raising money and sharing provisions.

In February 1981, workers at the Lee jeans factory in Greenock initiated a remarkable seven-month occupation after negotiations with owners Vanity Fair Corporation failed. The predominantly female workforce, facing the company's desire to transfer operations, barricaded themselves inside the factory. This action became a significant chapter in Scottish industrial history.
The Inverclyde community provided unwavering support, organizing fundraisers and sharing essential supplies. During the occupation, the factory hosted performances, including a play by 7:84 that humorously depicted strike life, predating the film 'Brassed Off' by 15 years.
Nearly 45 years later, the story has been transformed into a stage musical, 'Stand and Deliver: The Lee Jeans Sit In,' by journalist Paul English and writer Frances Poet. The musical premiered at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow, with original participants like Helen Monaghan, Maggie Wallace, Cathie, and Catherine Robertson involved.
The women adapted popular songs, rewriting lyrics to bolster morale and foster collective bonding during their prolonged protest. Support also came from other unions, with shipyard workers contributing to a fund that allowed workers occasional nights away from the factory for respite.
Political figures such as Tony Benn and Michael Foot visited the striking workers. Despite initial short-term success with a local management buyout forming Inverwear Limited, the company eventually faced receivership two years later. Nevertheless, the Lee jeans sit-in remains a pivotal event in trade union history, celebrated for demonstrating the power of solidarity and perseverance against large corporations.
