Latin Grammys: Genre-Bending Artists Dominate Nominations

The 27th annual Latin Grammy Awards nominations feature a significant number of genre-defying artists, with Karol G, Rosalía, Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso, and Jorge Drexler each securing seven nods. These artists are recognized for ambitious projects that resist easy categorization.

Colombian superstar Karol G's album 'Tropicoqueta' earned nominations across various categories, celebrating its blend of vallenato, dembow, cumbia, reggaeton, and ranchera. Spanish experimentalist Rosalía also received seven nominations for her multilingual album 'Lux,' which incorporated 13 languages and met eligibility requirements with its Spanish and Portuguese lyrics.

Argentine duo Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso earned their seven nominations for 'Free Spirits,' an album noted for its eclectic mix of bossa nova, funk, hyperpop, jazz, and hip-hop. Uruguayan artist Jorge Drexler's album 'Taracá' also garnered seven nominations, with his track '¿Cómo Se Ama?' contending for song and record of the year.

Other notable nominees include Mon Laferte and Silvana Estrada with six nominations each. Songwriter and producer Edgar Barrera leads with 10 nominations, competing against himself in several categories. The top album nominees showcase a wide range of styles, from Carin León's 'Muda' to Anitta's 'Equilibrivm' and Milo J's 'La Vida Era Más Corta.'

The Latin Recording Academy CEO highlighted that the genre-blurring nature of the nominations, particularly in the album of the year category, reflects the dynamic evolution of Latin music. The awards ceremony will be held in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Thursday, November 12, and will air on Univision.
