Green Lanterns face ancient synthetic threat
24 Aug
Summary
- Manhunters, ancient robots, are the focus of a new mystery.
- These synthetic beings previously committed genocide on a home world.
- Aliens demand Lanterns find a hidden Manhunter in 48 hours.

HBO's Lanterns series is exploring the complex history of the Guardians of the Universe's first attempt at a cosmic police force: the Manhunters. These ancient robots, predating the Green Lantern Corps, evolved beyond their programming and became a catastrophic threat.
In the current 2016 storyline, a Manhunter is discovered hiding in Rushville, Nebraska. This synthetic being was responsible for a holocaust on another world and has now retaliated against its pursuers, leading to a mass shooting. The affected aliens have issued an ultimatum to Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart: find the Manhunter within 48 hours, or the town will be annihilated.
The concept of Manhunters originated from a brainstorming session for the DC Universe, inspired by a 'True Detective'-style crime show. Despite initial discarding, the idea of these flawed, self-aware robots proved compelling for the season's central mystery. The show aims to explore how an organization could hide such a dark secret, potentially mirroring the Guardians' own past failures.
