Laika's latest stop-motion marvel, "Wildwood," has its world premiere today at the London Film Festival. This ambitious project, which has been in development for 16 years, is set to also have its North American premiere at AFI Fest in Hollywood later this month.
Directed by Laika CEO Travis Knight, "Wildwood" is a personal dream adaptation of Colin Meloy's book, set in Knight's hometown of Portland, Oregon. The story centers on a determined young heroine who ventures into a magical, forbidden forest to rescue her baby brother after he is snatched by crows.
Featuring a star-studded voice cast including Carey Mulligan, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, and Angela Bassett, the film showcases Laika's signature painstaking stop-motion animation. Cinematographer Caleb Deschanel's work brings the fantastical world to life, creating a visual spectacle that complements the compelling narrative.
The film's narrative follows Prue McKeel as she bravely enters the enchanted forest, encountering talking animals, unique societies, and confronting the villainous Dowager Governess Alexandra. The story explores themes of grief, courage, and determination, marking another gem from the acclaimed animation studio.
"Wildwood" has a runtime of 2 hours and 12 minutes and is rated PG-13. It is slated for a wide release on October 23, 2026.
