La Bola Negra Sweeps Toronto Film Festival Awards

The Toronto Film Festival concluded its 2026 edition with Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi's 'La Bola Negra' receiving the prestigious People's Choice Award. Netflix had previously acquired this sweeping Spanish-language film during the Cannes Film Festival, signaling its awards season potential.

Audience engagement was central to the festival's accolades. Following 'La Bola Negra,' the first runner-up for the top audience prize was 'I Play Rocky,' with 'Being Heumann' taking the second runner-up spot.

Further recognition was given to other categories. Matthew Rankin's 'Ladies and Gentlemen, Brian Mulroney' earned the best Midnight Madness title, while 'The Spiral' and 'Arrested Memory' were its runners-up. The international film award went to Simon Stone's 'Elsinore,' preceded by 'Possible Love' and 'The Assassins.'

In the documentary sphere, Barry Avrich's 'Darlene Love: I Know Where I've Been' was honored with the People's Choice award. 'Black Sunflowers' and 'The Ultra Runner' secured the runner-up positions in this category.

These audience awards are determined by TIFF attendees, with protocols to prevent duplicate voting, such as matching emails to ticket information and verifying IP addresses. A total of 294 films from 70 countries were showcased over the festival's 11 days.

As in recent years, TIFF's role as an awards season launchpad was noted as being secondary to Venice and Cannes, where major Oscar-contending films often debut. Toronto's approach, focusing on premieres without official press conferences or competitions, continues to draw celebrity appearances and fan interactions, though the overall glamour may be less pronounced compared to other major festivals.
