Kurt Russell's 'Tombstone' directorial role revealed
5 Mar
Summary
- Kurt Russell claims he secretly directed most of Tombstone.
- Director George P. Cosmatos was a 'ghost director.'
- Russell wishes Kevin Jarre's original script was available.

Kurt Russell has revealed that he secretly directed the majority of the 1993 Western film 'Tombstone.' Originally penned by Kevin Jarre, who was also slated to direct, Jarre was dismissed a month into principal photography due to schedule delays. George P. Cosmatos was brought in as a replacement, but Russell told True West in 2006 that he effectively took over directing duties.
Russell explained that he did not want directorial credit, leading Cosmatos to be referred to as a 'ghost director.' This significant additional responsibility contributed to a stressful production for Russell. He has expressed a desire to see Kevin Jarre's original, unedited screenplay made public, believing 'Tombstone' had the potential to be an even greater film than it is.
'Tombstone' is currently available for streaming on AMC+. Russell is also set to return to the Western genre in the upcoming Paramount+ series 'The Madison,' scheduled to premiere on March 14, 2026.
