11 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Theatre is a labor of love, not a financially viable profession
- Kunaal Roy Kapur struggles with phone distractions during live performances
- Staying off phones comes naturally to the actor

As of November 11th, 2025, actor Kunaal Roy Kapur has revealed that theatre remains a passion project for most performers, while films and OTT platforms are what keep the acting profession viable. Kunaal, who was recently seen in the play "Constellations" alongside Aahana Kumra, says he has always tried to strike a balance between cinema and theatre.
For Kunaal, theatre is driven purely by passion, not fame or money. He explains that the medium is "its own beast" and is not commercially viable in India. "It cannot sustain you financially, which is why most actors end up treating it as a passion project," he states. Kunaal adds that if acting is one's main profession, then TV or films are necessary to make a living.
The actor was also recently featured in the web show "Thode Door Thode Paas," which revolved around digital detox. Kunaal says staying away from the phone is not a struggle for him, especially as someone used to performing live. He finds phone ringtones during stage performances to be "the most irritating thing for an actor," as they disrupt the audience's immersion in the play.
