Kumartuli Ghat, Kolkata's renowned center for idol creation, is set for a significant transformation. A Rs 10-crore redevelopment initiative, spearheaded by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in collaboration with Adani Ports, is revitalizing the historic 18th-century ghat. This project aims to enhance the 300-meter stretch between Kumartuli and Champatala by introducing viewing decks, cultural zones, and improved civic amenities, all while meticulously preserving its rich heritage.

The comprehensive redevelopment includes strengthening the riverbank, restoring heritage sites, and creating pedestrian-friendly walkways. The vision extends to enhancing visitor experience with boating facilities, CCTV surveillance, and architectural lighting. Dedicated spaces for artisans, food kiosks, and community toilets are also part of the plan, designed to make the ghat more welcoming and accessible for all.

Beyond the infrastructural upgrades, Kumartuli Ghat is embracing a futuristic element with an AI-inspired robotic Durga idol. This innovative addition signals a unique blend of tradition and technology, aiming to reconnect younger generations with the historic riverfront. The project, expected to conclude by September, seeks to rejuvenate the area as a people-centric public realm.

Local residents and business owners have welcomed the revitalization, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the ghat's cultural identity and ensuring better security and upkeep. Concerns about access fees have been addressed with a focus on nominal charges for specific facilities to support cleanliness and infrastructure, ensuring continued public accessibility.
