The last remaining unsolved secret message embedded within the CIA headquarters' Kryptos sculpture has found a buyer, fetching nearly $1 million at auction. The archive, containing vital codes and charts compiled by the sculpture's artist, Jim Sanborn, was sold for $963,000 to an anonymous bidder. Three of the four encrypted messages on the iconic 10-foot-tall sculpture have been previously deciphered, but the final message, K-4, has long eluded cryptanalysts and enthusiasts.
Sanborn, who has been interacting with aspiring codebreakers for decades, decided to sell the solution to K-4. The winning bidder will receive not only the archive but also a private meeting with the 80-year-old artist. This meeting is intended to provide insights into the artistic intent and the method of deciphering the complex S-shaped copper screen, which resembles a fax message.
The archive's sale concluded after a brief disruption when original scrambled texts were discovered in the Smithsonian. The auction house noted that the purchaser is developing a long-term stewardship plan for the acquired secrets. Sanborn hopes the buyer will continue the tradition of engagement with the Kryptos community.
