Acclaimed director Hirokazu Kore-eda is set to direct and edit the live-action adaptation of Fujimoto Tatsuki's celebrated manga, 'Look Back.' This project represents Kore-eda's first foray into directing a live-action film based on a manga, focusing on two young women aspiring to be manga artists. Gkids has secured exclusive distribution rights for the film in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland.
The film was shot in Nikaho City, Japan, and is currently in post-production. K2 Pictures is producing the feature, which is slated for a 2026 theatrical release in Japan, followed by its international debut. Kore-eda expressed his inspiration stemmed from encountering the manga at a Tokyo station, feeling a powerful connection to the creator's resolve.
'Look Back' manga achieved significant success, with 2.5 million views on its first day and over 4 million within two days. It has sold more than 900,000 copies domestically and over 750,000 internationally across 37 countries, earning award nominations. The acquisition signifies Gkids' expansion into live-action features.
