11 Years of Harmony: Kolkata Youth Ensemble's Grand Concert

The Kolkata Youth Ensemble (KYE), founded in 2015, recently celebrated its 11th anniversary with an impressive concert titled "Waves of Onze" at Rabindra Sadan on July 31. What began as a small group has flourished into a large ensemble capable of uniting approximately 150 artistes, drawing members from various age groups and professions. This expansion has also broadened KYE's musical influence beyond West Bengal and India.

The anniversary concert, conducted by Amitava Ghosh, honored the significant contributions of four Indian luminaries: filmmaker Satyajit Ray, classical musician Vidushi Annapurna Devi, singer Asha Bhosle, and composer Salil Chowdhury. Their centenaries were specifically commemorated through a large-scale Vocal Symphony. The performance artfully wove together Western classical, Indian classical, and contemporary music, presenting beloved tunes in novel instrumental arrangements, notably reimagining Asha Bhosle's popular songs with string-led interpretations.

The latter half of the program featured a captivating fusion of instrumental music and vocals, deeply rooted in Indian classical traditions. This segment highlighted the synergy between established musicians and nearly 150 young talents, transforming the event into a vibrant celebration of both musical heritage and burgeoning artistry. Special performances included Indrani Sen singing Tagore songs, Joy Sarkar performing his composition "Brishti Paye Paye," and Bibha Sengupta presenting "Tabu Mone Rekho." Renowned elocutionist Satinath Mukhopadhyay hosted the memorable evening, which also saw Bibha Sengupta being felicitated.
