For this year's Durga Puja in Kolkata, an art installation reimagined Goddess Durga using 13,000 recycled plastic pens and refills. The 5.5-foot sculpture was created by artist Chandra Nath Saha and displayed at Tridhara Sammilani.
This innovative artwork transformed ordinary writing instruments into a striking visual representation of the goddess. Unlike the traditional idol, the pen sculpture was not part of the immersion rituals.
After its display, the sculpture was scheduled for dismantling. Its plastic components were to be sent for recycling, reinforcing the theme of sustainability and the potential for recycled materials in creative projects.
Saha aimed for viewers to appreciate the art first, then discover its unique medium. The installation successfully merged traditional Durga Puja imagery with contemporary concerns about plastic waste, offering a novel perspective.
