Kolkata Artists Defy Puja Theme Diktats

Kolkata's theme artistes are emphasizing the compatibility of artistic freedom with reverence for Ma Durga, even as some advisories suggest adhering to Sanatani traditions for puja themes and idol representations. Influential artist Bhabatosh Sutar stated that he would not be intimidated by dictates on Goddess representation, highlighting that his creative process is inherently respectful.

Sutar's current work includes themes on environmental conservation and neighborhood pond neglect. He believes that artistic integrity is inseparable from devotion. Similarly, Sushanta Pal views Durga's image as a canvas for varied imaginations, with one theme exploring spiritual detachment from the physical world, suggesting there's no single authorized depiction of the Goddess.

Other artists are also presenting unique concepts. Pradipta Karmakar will portray Durga as an 'ayah mashi' (caregiver), honoring daily maternal figures, while also exploring themes related to women's hair and ecological destruction. Gouranga Kuila plans to depict Shiva in an Ardhanarishvara form and Durga in a Buddhist style, showcasing a spectrum of interpretations.

While some artists are opting for more traditional themes, they continue to draw inspiration from scriptures and daily life. Anirban Das anticipates a focus on Sanatani traditions, incorporating elements from epics and ancient Bengal's trading history into his five Kolkata pujas and one in Contai.
