The Sangeet Surya Keshavrao Bhosale Natyagruha in Kolhapur has officially reopened its doors following a significant renovation. The theatre, which suffered damage from a fire on the night of August 8, 2024, was restored through a Rs25 crore investment from the state government. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the revitalized facility on August 9, 2026.
New booking charges for the theatre now range from Rs5,000 to Rs1 lakh. Daily rates vary based on the type of performance and day of the week, with experimental plays costing Rs18,000 on weekdays and Rs30,000 on weekends. Musical programs and other events are priced at Rs25,000 to Rs35,000, with full-day bookings reaching Rs1 lakh.
The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has implemented a new software for online bookings, aiming for affordability and transparency. A mandatory requirement to specify the proposed program during online application was introduced to curb exorbitant resale charges, a move lauded by KMC officials. However, theatre distributors have voiced concerns, seeking removal of this condition due to the unpredictable nature of artist availability and event scheduling.
