Parallax Films has secured international sales rights outside North America for Kogonada's new film, "Zi." The feature, which follows "Columbus" and "After Yang," was presented during the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Shot in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, "Zi" was filmed over three weeks in Hong Kong. The production embraced a radically independent model, with the seven core collaborators collectively owning the project and eschewing outside financing. The script evolved daily on location, emphasizing spontaneous creation and a discipline of one take per day.
The film stars Michelle Mao, Haley Lu Richardson, and Jin Ha as wandering individuals caught in a night that reshapes their lives. Kogonada, who also wrote and edited the film, focused on Hong Kong's distinctive relationship with memory and movement, meticulously choosing locations navigable largely on foot.
"Zi" premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, receiving strong reviews for its immersive depiction of urban life and Kogonada's signature elegant style. The film is dedicated to the late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose music inspired Kogonada during the project's development.
