Summary
- Historic King's Theatre reopens on August 1 after extensive refurbishment.
- The venue closed in 2022, facing financial peril before securing funding.
- Upgrades include accessibility improvements and new public spaces.

The historic King's Theatre in Edinburgh will reopen its doors to audiences on August 1, coinciding with the city's vibrant festival season. This 120-year-old Tollcross venue had closed its doors in 2022 to undergo a significant refurbishment and modernization project.
Initially, the theatre's future seemed uncertain due to soaring renovation costs, which nearly depleted the operator's funds. However, following substantial contributions from the City of Edinburgh Council, the Scottish government, and the UK government totaling approximately £8.85 million, the essential work has been completed.
Key improvements include increased capacity for wheelchair users, new accessible toilets, and two front-of-house lifts serving all levels. The project also incorporates new public spaces, a street-level café, and a Creative Engagement Studio for community activities. Test performances, including a "Frozen" singalong and a show by Mhairi Black, are scheduled for late July.
The theatre's summer program will feature events from the Edinburgh International Festival between August 11 and August 30. A special opening weekend will offer the public behind-the-scenes tours of the refurbished interior.
