A new historical drama series titled 'King of Hearts' is in development, focusing on the early life of Belgium's King Baudouin. The series will depict his unprepared ascension to the throne during a politically delicate period for Belgium and the world.
Viewers will witness Baudouin's internal struggle to find his voice, torn between his royal duties and the manipulation of those around him. The narrative promises to explore his journey of becoming a leader, confronting family fractures, and resisting the darker temptations of absolute control.
This ambitious project by De Wereldvrede aims for a global audience, weaving together Belgium's monarchy with significant historical events such as Congolese independence, Cold War geopolitics, and the influence of the Catholic Church. The series is being developed with potential international partners for a broad reach.
The project has already secured script funding from the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF). The Iberseries & Platino Industria confab in Madrid will host the inaugural Euro-Atlantic Co-Pro Pitch program where 'King of Hearts' will be presented.
