A significant collaboration is underway to develop a live-action television series based on Eiko Kadono's "Kiki's Delivery Service." This marks the property's inaugural live-action television treatment.
The project is currently in development and is planned as a 10-episode series, with each episode being half an hour long. These episodes will be drawn primarily from the first volume of Kadono's six-book series. The narrative centers on 13-year-old witch Kiki as she leaves her home for the port town of Koriko, where she establishes a delivery service and cultivates new friendships.
Irena Brignull, known for her work on "The Boxtrolls," is attached to write the series. The original novel, published in Japan in 1985, has achieved millions of worldwide sales. Studio Ghibli previously adapted the book into a notable anime film in 1989. This new series development coincides with the 40th anniversary of the book series.
Representatives from BBC Studios Kids & Family, Wheel in Motion, and Kadokawa Corporation have expressed enthusiasm for the project. They highlight the opportunity to introduce the classic story to a new audience globally and honor the book's significant anniversary. Eiko Kadono herself shared her confidence in the upcoming show.
