A beloved children's story is set to embark on a new adventure as a live-action television series. BBC Studios Kids & Family has partnered with U.K. production company Wheel in Motion and Japan's Kadokawa Corporation for this ambitious project.
This upcoming series will be based on Eiko Kadono's novel "Kiki's Delivery Service," which was first published in Japan in 1985. It is planned as 10 half-hour episodes, drawing inspiration mainly from the initial book in the renowned six-part series.
The narrative centers on Kiki, a 13-year-old witch, who leaves her home to establish herself in the vibrant port town of Koriko. There, she launches her own unique delivery service and cultivates new friendships.
Acclaimed screenwriter Irena Brignull, known for her work on "The Boxtrolls," is attached to write the series. The adaptation commemorates the 40th anniversary of the original book series, which has achieved millions of sales worldwide and was famously adapted into an anime film by Studio Ghibli in 1989.
