Kid Millions, known for his work with the band Oneida, has unveiled his debut solo album under the moniker Man Forever. This experimental project was conceived after witnessing an ensemble recreate Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music using acoustic instruments, sparking a desire to explore similar sonic textures through drumming.
Millions meticulously tuned his drum kit and improvised extensively, layering the results into complex polyrhythmic compositions. He enlisted Brian Chase of Yeah Yeah Yeahs to assist with drum preparation and Richard Hoffman from Sightings to contribute bass textures. Two extended pieces were recorded over two days, forming the core of the album.
The resulting record, Man Forever, diverges from Oneida's typical rock sound, offering a more abstract and visceral listening experience. Despite its conceptual underpinnings, the album is designed to immerse the listener in a captivating flow of beats and textures, often evoking a calming, rain-like quality.
While the precision and unpredictability of Millions' drumming echo the dual nature of Metal Machine Music, there are moments where the beats can become somewhat monotonous. However, Hoffman's contributions of high-whirring bass timbres effectively complement Millions' drumming, adding depth and sustaining interest throughout the tracks. Kid Millions has already begun performing Man Forever live and plans to expand the project, potentially drawing parallels to large-scale drum ensembles.
