Summary
- Sanjay Dutt announced 'Khalnayak Returns' at an event in Mumbai.
- Rajkumar Santoshi politely declined directing the film.
- The sequel idea originated from 4000 inmates in jail.

Sanjay Dutt, along with Aksha Kamboj and Jyoti Deshpande, announced the upcoming 'Khalnayak Returns' at a Mumbai event on April 24. The unveiling of the intro teaser was met with considerable enthusiasm, amplified by the iconic 'Khalnayak' theme music. While Subhash Ghai directed the original 1993 film, he will not be directing the sequel.
Initially, Dutt had approached filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi to direct 'Khalnayak Returns,' believing Santoshi's understanding of commercial cinema would be ideal. This collaboration would have marked their first professional pairing. However, Santoshi respectfully declined the offer due to his ongoing work on 'Lahore 1947' and upcoming projects with Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan.
Dutt himself shared that the inspiration for 'Khalnayak Returns' struck him during his time in jail. He revealed that inmates consistently requested songs from the original 'Khalnayak,' prompting him to ask them for ideas for a potential sequel. This unique concept, derived from thousands of pages of suggestions, eventually appealed to Dutt.
