Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan has broken his silence regarding Kevin Costner's exit from the series. Costner, who portrayed ranch owner and Governor John Dutton, left the show halfway through its fifth season. Sheridan explained that Costner was initially contracted for only three seasons but extended his stay.
Costner had expressed a desire to pursue other projects, leading to his eventual departure. Following his exit, Costner launched his own Western film series, "Horizon: An American Saga." The first installment reportedly did not perform well at the box office, impacting the release of subsequent films.
Sheridan noted that the network viewed losing Costner as a significant gamble, especially given the show's popularity. He also mentioned that the original conception of the series involved a baton pass to John Dutton's youngest son, Kayce, played by Luke Grimes, who now fronts his own spin-off.
The series has also seen success with its spin-offs, including "Dutton Ranch." Yellowstone is available to stream on Paramount+.
