Kevin Aviance: From Hate Crime Survivor to Beyoncé Muse

Twenty years after a violent hate crime, drag artist and dance music icon Kevin Aviance is reclaiming his narrative. In June 2006, Aviance was brutally attacked in New York City, suffering a broken jaw and significant career setbacks. Despite the trauma, he famously declared, "You can't keep a good queen down," and continued to advocate against anti-LGBTQ+ violence.

His career, which began in the vibrant ballroom and circuit party scenes of Washington D.C. and New York, produced hits like "Din Da Da" and "Alive." The 1996 underground anthem "Cunty" gained renewed global attention when Beyoncé sampled it in her 2022 album 'Renaissance,' introducing Aviance's influence to a new generation.

Aviance sees the dance floor as vital LGBTQ+ infrastructure, fostering community and resistance. He is currently active, releasing new music like his 2023 album HIPPOPOTAMUS! and touring. Amidst renewed political backlash against queer expression, he urges collective defense and visibility for the community, drawing strength from historical activists.

He emphasizes the need to "start living outwardly" and support each other, particularly Black trans women and drag artists. Aviance believes that while trauma recedes, it becomes part of one's story, inspiring continued resilience and the defense of present and future lives.
