Mammootty Narrates Doc on Kerala's Deep Football Roots

A new cinematic series, Panthadikkam, narrated by Padma Bhushan Mammootty, offers an in-depth look at football's unique place in Kerala's culture. This five-episode documentary explores the deep-seated passion, rivalries, and celebrations that have elevated the sport beyond mere recreation.

The series traces football's historical journey within Kerala, from its early club days and the golden eras of the Santosh Trophy to its present-day professional landscape. It also investigates how international football, particularly teams like Brazil and Argentina, became so intricately linked with the state's identity.

Panthadikkam showcases the pervasive influence of football in Kerala's daily life. Evidence of this includes towering flex boards, painted autorickshaws, midnight match screenings, passionate fan debates, and global travel to support favorite teams. The documentary highlights a culture that extends far beyond the football field.

Mammootty expressed his admiration for the game's emotional significance in Kerala, stating it's an emotion that unites people. He noted that Panthadikkam aims to capture this special connection, bringing alive the stories, celebrations, and memories. The series also features the inspiring journey of Vysakh S.R., captain of India's first National Amputee Football Team, underscoring the passion football ignites.

Directed by Nyx Lopez and produced by Dr. Sangeetha Janachandran, Panthadikkam premieres on October 1, 2026, on ZEE5. This marks Mammootty's inaugural narration for a sports documentary, with each 20-minute episode promising to reveal the beautiful game through diverse Kerala narratives.
