On Friday, October 23, comedian Kenan Thompson was presented with the Empowering Africa Award at Self Help Africa's 16th Annual New York Change Makers Gala. Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, last year's recipient, humorously bestowed the honor upon Thompson, acknowledging the SNL star's multiple impersonations of him. This event, held at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, highlighted Thompson's career of bringing people together.
The gala successfully raised more than $400,000 to aid farmers, entrepreneurs, and women-led businesses throughout Africa. A significant portion, $145,500, was allocated to community savings groups that empower women to start and expand their enterprises. Thompson's partner, John Ryan Jr. of "Artists for Artists," also attended the evening.
