Ken Bruce: Radio 2 Audience Plummets Post-Departure

Ken Bruce, a veteran presenter, revealed his reasons for leaving BBC Radio 2 after over three decades of hosting the mid-morning show. He transitioned to Greatest Hits Radio, a move he states was entirely his decision, driven by a desire to shake up his routine and avoid becoming stagnant. Bruce mentioned that he found himself increasingly grumpy after 46 years with the BBC and sought new challenges.

Since Bruce's departure, the weekday mid-morning slot at BBC Radio 2, now helmed by Vernon Kay, has reportedly experienced a significant drop in listenership, falling from approximately 8.1 million to 6.6 million listeners. Bruce acknowledged this shift, noting that some listeners did follow him to his new station. However, he expressed no desire to gloat or criticize his former employer, focusing instead on the success of his current show.

Bruce also highlighted his strategic acquisition of the rights to the popular PopMaster quiz, allowing him to bring the segment with him to Greatest Hits Radio. He indicated that his new role is thriving, with reported audience figures doubling since his arrival. Bruce remains enthusiastic about his broadcasting career and has no plans for retirement, even preparing to host a PopMaster event on a Saga Cruise.
