Kelly Clarkson, the first winner of American Idol, has revealed a surprising detail about her prize more than two decades later. On a recent episode of her talk show, Clarkson, 43, stated that she never received the car that was promised to her upon winning the competition in 2002.

She recounted the incident, drawing parallels to a guest who had not yet received his reality show prize. Clarkson explained that beyond the $1 million recording contract, a car was part of the deal, a necessity for her at the time. This was particularly galling as Clay Aiken, the runner-up of the second season, and his mother, were both given cars.

In contrast, other American Idol winners have had better experiences with their prizes. Carrie Underwood, who won season 4 in 2005, confirmed in March 2023 that she still owns the Ford Mustang convertible she received and cherishes it as a reminder of her life-changing win.
