Episode 3 of "The Good Whale" documents the significant return of Keiko, a whale, to his native Iceland. This relocation marks a profound transition from his previous environments in Mexico City and Oregon. Keiko was moved to a spacious sea pen located in a cove on Heimaey, a remote volcanic island. The pen, about two-thirds the size of a football field, offers a more natural setting than his former tanks.
This return to the ocean allows Keiko to experience natural elements like waves, currents, and tides. For the first time since his youth, he can perceive ocean sounds distinctly, differentiating between the calls of various animals and their directions. Trainers utilize a boat called the Draupnir, or "walk boat," to guide Keiko out of his pen, with the hope that he will eventually follow it into the open ocean and join a wild whale pod.
