An "enormously important" 18th-century painting by Scottish artist Katherine Read has been authenticated on the BBC's Fake or Fortune program. The artwork, discovered wrapped in a sleeping bag, is now estimated to be worth more than £100,000.
Mary-Louise Wedderburn inherited the portrait two decades ago and had long suspected it was by Katherine Read, a relative known for her portrayals of women and children. The painting depicts an Indian woman in formal attire, showcasing a pearl necklace, emerald pendant, and nose ring.
Art historian Charles Greig expressed great certainty regarding the painting's origin, stating, "On the basis of all the evidence put together, I am entirely certain that this painting is by Katherine Read." The discovery marks a significant find for art history.
