Filmmaker Onir's queer drama, 'We Are Faheem & Karun,' has achieved further international acclaim, securing a major acting honor at Canada's ReelOut Queer Film + Video Festival. Kashmiri debut actor Sana Javeid was awarded the Kim Renders Memorial Award for Best Supporting Performance. The film, which has traveled to over 30 international festivals, competed against a diverse selection of global cinema.
The narrative centers on a gay love story between a security guard and a local student in the Kashmir Valley, navigating themes of faith and societal pressures. It holds the distinction of being the first queer feature film set in Kashmir. Sana Javeid portrays Faheem's mother, a character who offers silent support to her son.
Onir discovered Javeid in Srinagar and was impressed by her natural talent, expanding her role in the film. 'We Are Faheem & Karun' has previously won awards, including Best Director at the UK Asian Film Festival. A theatrical release is anticipated around June 2026.
