From February 21 to 26, Bengaluru's Ravindra Kalakshetra will host Honnaru Rangotsava, a festival celebrating six decades of modern Kannada theatre. This event unites six iconic theatre groups, each boasting a rich five-decade legacy, to honor their profound impact on the state's cultural landscape. The festival delves into the history of Kannada theatre, tracing its origins from tribal and folk performances to its development into professional productions addressing mythological and social themes.
The pivotal moment for these groups was the 1969 staging of Girish Karnad's 'Tughlaq,' a production that transformed Kannada theatre by bringing amateur groups together and establishing playwrights like Karnad and actors like CR Simha and Lokesh. The early 1970s further propelled the movement with bold productions and new talents emerging, making theatre a platform for discourse and protest.
Despite challenges, including the rise of television, the passion of artists kept Kannada theatre alive. Honnaru Rangotsava serves as a tribute to the playwrights, directors, and actors who have given Kannada theatre its distinct voice, shape, and life over the years.
