Summary
- Kamila Andini's fifth film explores female rage after prison.
- Actress Putri Marino underwent intensive character training for the role.
- Film festivals are crucial for Indonesian cinema's global visibility.
Kamila Andini's "Four Seasons in Java" premieres at the Toronto Film Festival, marking her third appearance. The film stars Putri Marino as Pertiwi, who returns home after two decades of imprisonment for killing an assailant in self-defense. This marks Andini's second collaboration with Marino, following "Cigarette Girl."
Andini, known for portraying women's struggles, describes "Four Seasons in Java" as potentially her most furious film. She explains that researching the script brought out intense emotions, but she finds anger liberating. The preparation included extensive character workshops, with Marino training in skills like horseback riding and fighting.
For Indonesian filmmakers, festivals are vital gateways to international markets. Andini notes that Indonesia is not a top-of-mind country for Asian cinema, unlike Thailand or the Philippines. This motivates Indonesian filmmakers to use platforms like film festivals for financing and cultural exposure.
Andini also creates separate festival and theatrical cuts for her films, adjusting character lists based on feedback. However, "Four Seasons in Java" will not have a festival cut, as Andini aims to showcase the vibrancy of Indonesian society with a larger cast. She collaborated with costume designer Hagai Pakan to ensure distinct visual identities for each character, addressing potential visual similarities for North American audiences.
"Four Seasons in Java" will premiere in Toronto before its Indonesian release on October 8th. The film is also scheduled to be shown at the Busan International Film Festival.
