Summary
- Kamal Haasan and Sridevi's on-screen pairing was iconic
- Sridevi's mother hoped they would marry in real life
- Kamal Haasan viewed Sridevi as family, not a romantic partner

In 2025, Kamal Haasan reflected on his iconic on-screen pairing with the late actress Sridevi. Their performance in the 1983 film 'Sadma' is still regarded as one of the finest examples of emotional storytelling in Indian cinema. Haasan shared that their chemistry was so compelling that it not only captured the hearts of audiences but also led Sridevi's mother to hope they would marry in real life.
The revelation came from Haasan himself in a heartfelt note titled "The 28 Avatars of Sridevi," which he wrote following Sridevi's demise in 2018. Haasan read the note publicly at a memorial service held in her honor, reflecting on their enduring friendship and professional collaboration that spanned multiple films. He clarified that he had always declined the suggestion of marriage, explaining that he viewed Sridevi as family and could never imagine marrying her. Their bond, he noted, was defined by mutual admiration and trust rather than romance.
Haasan and Sridevi first met in 1976 on the sets of the Tamil film 'Moondru Mudichu,' where Sridevi was just 13 years old and starting her acting career. Haasan, who was her co-star and also worked as an assistant director, was responsible for helping her rehearse her lines and scenes. Over the years, the two went on to star together in several acclaimed films, including the Hindi remake of 'Sadma.'
