K-Pop Stars Opt Out of Grammys, Opening Doors
1 Oct
Summary
- BTS and Blackpink are not submitting for Grammy awards.
- New Asian Pop Performance category eligibility rules exclude Blackpink.
- aespa, Kenshi Yonezu, Miist, SB19, and Stray Kids are potential nominees.

The inaugural year of the Grammy Awards' Asian Pop Performance category features an unexpectedly open field. Major K-pop acts BTS and Blackpink have opted out of submitting for consideration, significantly altering the potential nominee landscape.
Blackpink's exclusion stems from the Recording Academy's requirement that nominees must feature significant use of Asian languages. This rule disqualifies their recent all-English releases.
Several other artists are being considered for nominations. The K-pop group aespa is noted for its U.S. presence and collaborations. Japanese artist Kenshi Yonezu submitted "Iris Out," which achieved a record high for a Japanese song on the Billboard Global 200, and also has a potential second submission with "Jane Doe."
Miist, a Chinese artist, has submitted "It's Too Late To Love You (Chinese & English Edition)," a collaboration with legendary producer Narada Michael Walden. Filipino group SB19 is also a contender with their song "Visa," which reflects the challenges faced by Filipinos working abroad.
Additionally, Stray Kids' "STAY," a track dedicated to their fandom, is highlighted as a potentially meaningful submission, despite other eligible hits.
