K-Pop's From20 Redefines 'Big Boy' Beyond Gender

The song "BIG BOY" by K-pop artist from20, released on June 26 as the title track of his album "Rated R," champions a message of confidence that extends beyond traditional definitions of gender, race, or sexual orientation. This message originated from casual conversations with friends.

Having spent five years rebuilding his career, from20, formerly known as Raehwan of BIGSTAR, co-founded the independent label WAY BETTER. This venture allows him complete lyrical freedom, although Korea's public broadcaster has deemed several tracks, including "BIG BOY," ineligible for broadcast due to profanity and explicit content.

from20's music resonates most strongly with international audiences, particularly in the United States and Latin America. His music video for "BIG BOY" stands out in K-pop for its deliberate inclusion of diverse body types, genders, and skin tones, aiming to create a sense of belonging for all viewers.

The artist also addresses criticism and online negativity by incorporating it into his music, such as the interlude "Skit 1 (They All Gossip About Me)." He views this as a way to transform hate into inspiration, demonstrating resilience and artistic control.

His artistic philosophy is inspired by performers like Michael Jackson, focusing on delivering positive messages. Through his music and performances, including upcoming shows at KCON LA in August and the 2026 Atlanta Korean Festival, from20 aims to create safe spaces and foster acceptance for diverse communities, emphasizing that shared humanity is more important than any label.
