Magnolia Pictures will release the Oscar-qualifying documentary "Just Look Up," focusing on Michael Greenberg, the founder of Climate Defiance. Greenberg employs innovative and confrontational tactics to advocate for action on global warming.
The film documents a youth movement known for its radical nonviolent direct action, confronting politicians and oil executives. This idealistic crew improvises and perseveres, often with humorous results, drawing inspiration from historical movements like Gandhi's Satyagraha and the Civil Rights Movement.
Directed by Betsy Hershey and Emma Wall, and executive produced by Adam McKay, the documentary premiered at CPH:DOX, winning the F:ACT Award. It has since screened globally, including at Tribeca and Sydney Film Festivals.
Directors Hershey and Wall aimed to inspire action beyond despair, integrating Greenberg's background as a standup comedian. The film features comedy sets alongside the activism, emphasizing that constructive conflict and humor are effective strategies for challenging powerful entities and driving change.
"Just Look Up" is set for a one-week run in New York and Los Angeles starting December 4, 2026, followed by a wider theatrical release in early 2027. The film's soundtrack includes music from Chappell Roan, Doechii, and Billie Eilish.
