Icelandic Teen Drama 'Just a Kid' Debuts

The coming-of-age film "Just a Kid" by Vala Ómarsdóttir is set to make its debut, with veteran Icelandic producer Hlín Jóhannsdóttir of Ursus Parvus leading the project. The film's sales are being handled by French-U.K. outfit Alief.
"Just a Kid" centers on Julia, a 16-year-old who moves from Norway to Iceland and faces challenges fitting into a new school while caring for her sister. The story unfolds as she finds her voice through the school newspaper and a charismatic peer, before confronting past trauma, shame, and family duties.
Director Vala Ómarsdóttir drew inspiration from her own experiences as a mother and extensive research into teenage life. She collaborated closely with her young cast through rehearsal-driven sessions to authentically capture the adolescent perspective and explore the complexities of connection and boundaries.
Alief partner Miguel Govea praised the project's story and setting, noting the magic created by Jóhannsdóttir and Ómarsdóttir. He described "Just a Kid" as a tender tale of teen angst and awakening, poised to resonate with discerning audiences.
The film secured funding from various sources, including the Icelandic Film Centre, Icelandic and Estonian tax rebates, and Nordisk Film & TV Fond. Max is slated for the theatrical release in Iceland.
Separately, Jóhannsdóttir is also pitching "At The End of the Road" at New Nordic Films. This project reunites her with the team behind "Driving Mum" and explores Alzheimer's disease through an unconventional friendship, promising a darkly humorous and poignant narrative.
